Travelling long distances with your dog: a UK checklist

For a long drive, restrain your dog with a harness and seat belt, stop roughly every two hours for a toilet and stretch break, bring water and a bowl, never leave them in a hot car, and pack their lead, poo bags and any medication. Plan dog-friendly stops before you set off.

Before you go

Keep your dog restrained for the whole journey — Rule 57 applies from start to finish. Stop about every two hours for a toilet break, a short walk and a drink. Never leave your dog alone in the car: even on a mild day it can quickly overheat and become fatal.
